In water treatment applications, temperature measurement is an intrinsically relevant parameter and is particularly useful because it allows users to compensate for the acquired value of parameters such as pH, chlorine, oxygen, suspended solids and turbidity.

Temperature is a critical parameter in determining water quality and is of fundamental importance for the environment. It determines the maximum concentration of dissolved oxygen in water and affects the rate of chemical and biological reactions. Temperature is intrinsically a measure of the thermal state of a material.

One of the most commonly used methods of temperature determination is measurement using a resistance thermometer. Resistance thermometers offer high stability, accuracy and repeatability. The advantages of platinum resistors include high accuracy and a wide operating range. The electrical resistance of the sensor used in this type of thermometer, called an RTD, changes as the temperature varies; increasing with increasing temperature, so it is defined as PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient). Therefore, measuring the value of the electrical resistance allows the user to determine the temperature.

In industrial applications, PT100 sensors are widely used. The abbreviation PT indicates that the sensor is made of platinum (Pt), while the number 100 states that the sensor has an electrical resistance of 100 ohms at 0°C.
